PLATE LUNCH SERIES FALL 2013 #20 MEAT JUN

MEAT JUN (Korean Style Beef)
All photos are from Google Images and I am not trying to make money off of these photos.

Meat Jun, just a great idea in Korean foods. Tender thinly sliced beef, seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic, soy sauce, sesames, and sugar, almost like a teriyaki, but not quite because of the sesames. Ooo, the chef will marinate the meat, and then dip it in flour, and then some beaten eggs, possibly season it before the frying process, but when it's done, it's a heavenly dish if you love beef such as myself.

Then the meat jun is sliced into strips, and served with a dipping sauce made with soy sauce, vinegar, hoisin sauce, chopped green onion, garlic and Sriracha hot sauce and toasted sesame seeds.

What do we eat in Hawaii? We eat Korean style too, and there's a lot of places that serves up meat jun, heck there may be some place where you live that has a Korean BBQ joint, check them out. And usually at a Korean establishment, the sides are awesome, you'll get the standard macaroni salad, but the side will include, pickled cabbage, kim chi, seaweed, pasta, all kinds of stuff, potatoes, man it's nuts, you got to go venture you foodie you!

This is a nicely done meat jun
Another meat jun plate with the dipping sauce, I'd pound this in a heartbeat with rice and mac salad, in fact, I'd love to put some mayonnaise on it too for some richness.
After working out..a plate like this will fill you up for sure, or whenever you got the munchies.
Late night dinners, if you can find a diner that does meat jun, it's a great meal to end that evening after the opera, after the ballet, after the ball game, after kicking someone's ass that tried to jack your car.
This plate is big enough for 2 peeps.

As you can see, meat jun the Korean battered thin cuts of beef is looking good, and like any kind of food, if done right, will taste ono (delicious).

I'm sure you all get hungry on a vay cay, and if you're born and raised local from Hawaii, you are searching for a good plate to satisfy your hunger, you aren't looking for fancy shmancy, you just want 2 scoops of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and that entree, or a combo of 2 or 3 entrees, and you don't mind if you look like a hog chomping down that plate, no matter what the entrĂ©e is, a scoop of roast pork with gravy, a loco moco, some sweet and sour spareribs, it don't matter, you just want to inhale the food. Look guys, I know what you want to do, that's to just scarf, mop, you just don't want to be bothered when you get that hot plate to your table, you want to get down to business, of eating, you don't want to have any conversations on the weather, the other person's sad ass life, you could give a shit! I don't give a shit, I don't care if the person sitting across from me lost his wife, job…just do not BUG ME WHEN I'M EATING MY PLATE!!!! I'm serious, if you gut issues, you work that shit out before we go out to eat!…Except if you're buying then I have to by all means listen to your sad ass stories because that would be rude for me to not listen while I feed my face like there's no tomorrow.

Forget that vegan and vegetarian bull shit! Forget about it. Just let go of your fears, let it go. Take a deep breath, let it go man, just let it go…you know you want that fatty pork belly adobo because she's sexy, she's spicy, she's got an aroma that wants to make you take off your shirt. C'mon man, get with it, she wants you.

Now for those of you unfamiliar with local food, it's simple but done good and comforting. And according to my contacts, Cousins is an alright dig to dig into.

IMAGES FROM GOOGLE IMAGES AND NOT MEANT FOR ME TO MAKE ANY PROFITS FROM IT.

OK guys, now you kinda know what we eat here in Hawaii, it's really a melting pot of ethnic styles that were brought over from the plantation days, those days when immigrants came from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea, the Pacific Islands, and elsewhere. We do it umami style. Our ingredients are simple, give us soy sauce and sugar, maybe some garlic and ginger, salt, pepper, we are good to go. Until the next post, keep your shit together!

Do you need some learnin? Here's some stuff you need to know.

Musubi- pronounced moo- soo-bee, it is rice shaped in rectangular usually, sometimes in a triangle, and sometimes there is a salty plum called an ume, pronounced oo-may, in the center with a nori wrap, pronounced no-ree, a seaweed wrap that goes around the rice, like sushi, and sometimes there's a protein on top of it, like Spam, or fired chicken, or a piece of fish.

Maki Sushi- pronounced mah-kee, it is a log rolled sushi with simple seasoned rice, and generally a tuna center, with bonito shavings, or tuna shavings that's colored red or green for presentation, and maybe shredded vinegar seasoned carrots, wrapped in nori.

Ono- pronounced oh no, meaning delicious. Example: "That bento from Cousins was ono!"

FACTS- The Big Island of Hawaii where Cousins is located is situated on the largest island in the Hawaiian island chain, it is the youngest of all islands with a live volcano in Kilauea (Kee low as in now, way ah). Hilo town where Cousins is located is on the east side of the island where it rains quite often.

It is 4,028 square miles large with a populate of about 190,000, give or take.
Geography Location: 19 degrees 34'N 155 degrees 30'W
HILO TOWN, HAWAII ISLAND FROM THE OCEAN, MAUNA KEA IS SNOWING IN BACKGROUND.
HILO IS THE PORTION IN RED, AND IN ORANGE IN THE TOP EXAMPLE, MAUI ISLAND IS TO THE NORTHWEST.
