Maui- Family Returns, Food & Conversations

Food runs deep in this family of ours, everyone is a cook, it was a must growing up, you either learned to cook somthing or starved. And since my sister Esther and her husband John are back for a little over a week, we had a small get together last night at my sister Joyce and her husband Greg's house. The last time we actually really gathered there was for a holiday dinner, and the last big one was when our mom Peggy was laid to rest almost 2 years ago. So this night was a good small gathering of family, as we look to the future, we're all getting up there in age, and seeing our little nieces and nephews running around, I just keep on thinking will they have gasoline when they're 30? This world is filled with uncertainty, but never mind that. The food was awesome, my brother Calvin made some Chicken Hekka, my brother Elton was cutting some steaks from Greg's grill, and he made a killer soup with pumpkins in it and pork, and John made a tofu salad, Joyce made something, everyone contributed, except me, I just show up to eat and put away the folding tables and chairs ha ha.

Some of my family members owned and operated restaurants, my brother Harold was partners with some people back in the 80s and 90s ran a Chinese restaurant and a local diner. John owned a local dig, my sister Esther started book keeping in restaurants and seafood suppliers. Later Harold, John and Esther would form a team that started the Honokowai Okazu Ya & Deli, for roughly 9 years was one of the most successful restaurants in the state of Hawaii. They would eventually sell the restaurant and move on their separate ways. John & Esther moved to Washington and tried to make a go of it there opening a small dig, that would succumb to the economy, so did Harold, he also tried, but the economy was too tough for them on their latest ventures.

But the night was not about business, it was just good home conversations, getting reaquainted with each other. Family is important on Maui, family... that's all that matters. Oh yeah can't forget my sister inlaw Patsy, she's a foodie herself and is the self proclaimed Sommelier of the family, she loves her some wine, reds, whites, pinks, she is into it. Me I'll take a cold can of Coke.

Photo below brother Cal, the Pupu King savors the flavors of the night, in the background my brother Harold is hugged by brother inlaw and former business partner John McKivor who packs a sense of humor, and is pretty good on a street bike. Some of the little ones look on, Ethan, sister Joyce sitting.

Photo below my big sister Esther or (Ess) takes a photo of the family she hasn't seen for a couple years, as Kamahie and mom Marie look on. Esther kind of took mom's place in the family when mom died, so did Joyce, in fact all of the females in the Sambrano family, all stepped up to play Mama, or the little ones Gramma, it's a nuturing thing females have I guess, the whole family is blessed to have all the women around.

My friend and boss at Kapalua Jaime Navarro is a wife, and mother of 2 cute boys, she and her husband are active, and takes care of their health, unlike yours truly, I'll polish some pork chops and down it with a milk shake chaser. Well Jaime is into organic peanut butter, she uses it for sandwiches, and making cookies, and she just loves anything organic. Lets take a look at some of the reasons Jaime uses organic.

1. She doesn't like pesticides
2. She doesn't like GMOs
3. She believes in sustaining the planet
4. She believes in the aina (land) and to protect its natural resources
5. She doesn't like pesticides.........oh I said that already. But the jar you see in this blog is from Costco. So the nutrients in this jar is very healthy.

Maui Vegas & Food Fremont Hotel & Casino

The Fremont Hotel & Casino is still the most popular spot for Mauians going to Vegas, famous for their Seafood Buffet. www.fremontcasino.com for more information, but if you ask any local that visits Vegas like every 3 months he or she can tell you what time they're opened, and who is on staff, and what they drive, and where they live. The Fremont Hotel and Casino owned and operated by Boyd Gaming isn't the posh strip model, it's an older hotel with better deals. So what's the thing about Vegas that Mauians still have to go there?

Rodney: Bradda, living on one island surrounded by paradise, once in a while taking the wife to Sin City and gambling and having a cheap good time is O rite bradda. And as far as da food? We like to go to da Fremont Seafood Buffet, king crab legs, da carving station, cannot beat. I been in fine dining most of my life in Oahu and in Vegas too, I been around, traveled the world cuz, don't let my local boy looks fool you, I know food, and met some very awesome chefs. But for a good fun time, and good food for da price? Fremont's Seafood night is killahz. Sometimes we'll have a golf outing, and go grine seafood aftahz, no can beat, no can!

Aunty Lei: Bradda, az all about Vegas, me an my husband will go 3 times a year, visit one of my elderly sisters that lives in Vegas, and stay with her, but we always go play slots, or shoot craps for fun, and when we do we go to the Fremont for eat the Seafood Buffet, and I love me some king crab legs. Da best brah.

Paul: Cuz, I wen juss turn 21, and been Vegas twice last year cuz, da place is good fun, to da max! And my cousins who are older turned me on to da Fremont's Seafood Buffet, and man, I just don't stop eating man, killaz cuz!

Bunny: My girlfriends and I go to Vegas five times a year, we go to New York once a year, on our way back from da Big Apple, we stay at the Fremont and love their Seafood Buffet, I love the king crab legs, like everyone there. But the thing about Vegas is it's still cheap, it really is, I do a lot of traveling for business and I am single so I kind of know foods, I am a foodie. But Vegas has so much good food everywhere it's great, but Fremont's Seafood Buffet is just right, and I love desserts, and they have it there too. My friends make fun of me, "How come you go Vegas? go someplace else." Well Vegas is Hawaiian's second home, I feel at home there, I am thinking of buying a home, sort of skeptical because of the economy, but I found a nice house for less than 100,000 bucks, I can actually buy it, but what if I can't get work? Just a thought, but I know that town inside out, I also was thinking of possibly opening up a eatery there, I love to cook too, I went to culinary school on the mainland, and have a business major. Vegas will turn around, it's just when do we roll the dice right?

Tommy: Me and da boyz we dig out cuz, on a four day jaunt and we stay at da Cal, but we eat at da Fremont for da seafoods cuz, no can beat! Imagine 8 freeking big ass Hawaiians standing in line at da buffet, dey muss be telling each udda, shit, catch some moah crabz.

Well that's saying it like a local from the islands, Vegas will always make money off the locals here, the house always rule, you still have to pay the house at least their 20 percent vig, and it seems ridiculous that you have to bet 100 bucks and only win 80 bucks. But the devil is luring you into his world and deceiving you ha ha. Nonetheless Vegas is still a rocking town despite them being the number one city in real estate foreclosures and high unemployment, but Vegas still has that charm islanders love, I think it's the lights at night, the scantly clad waitresses, golfing, shows, the Hoover Dam, and other fun stuff, but who wants to vacation in the Bahamas if they're from Hawaii? That's why the desert is appealing.

THE PARADISE SEAFOOD FANTASY NIGHTS

Tuesdays & Fridays 4pm to 10pm $17.99 per person. Can't beat that!

Maui to Atlanta Couple Opens Lunacy Black Market restaurant

Cynthia Thomet one of my buddies from Akaku Television moved to Atlanta a few years ago with her husband Chef Paul Luna to open up their restaurant with a catchy name, Lunacy Black Market. According to their website they're doing great, for a small eatery it has gained a pretty large following. My family has been in the restaurant biz, and I can attest that it is a tough life, a hard biz, but if you love what you do, then work isn't work.

I just emailed Cynthia, hopefully I can get more insights from her personally on what life is like since I last saw her a few years ago. I figure Atlanta has a mix of people, like any big city, and was wondering if they ever have to rearrange the menu from time to time. Restaurants come and go, and if your quality is down, kiss profits good bye. So I know that Paul is always on the ball like most owner/chefs.

Go to their website and see for yourself, a Maui couple does good.

Okolehao A Hawaiian Moonshine- Maui

Hawaiian moonshine, that's what Okolehao is, orginigally made from the Ti plants roots, it was what the natives drank as their beer, to catch a buzz. Amazing isn't it? That every culture has their liquor for a feel good time. Hawaiians weren't any different, okolehao was the drink.

When the white settlers came to the islands, they introduced the techniques of distillation, the process of separating different mixtures based on differences in their volatilities in a boiling mixture. And then fermenting it, the starches from the roots turned to sugar. The liquor was 60 to 80 proof. Okolehao was also sold to the military personnel in World War Two, but once vodka and rum was sold in the islands, the production of Okolehao subsided, but was still made underground much like moonshine back in the states.

Much like whiskey, the taste would vary from different distillers, the length of time it was aged, usually in used  oak barrels. Also as others started to produce Okolehao, other ingredients with sugar content was added, such as pineapple, taro, raw sugar etc. So the taste varied, much like wines, beers, and other liquors today, but this drink believe it or not does have some followers. Recently some guy and his wife from Chicago asked me if I ever drank that, I said no to his surprise. I just never had anyone to turn me on to it, apparently this guy and his wife have been traveling all over the world, and are adventurous, and had some old Hawaiian man turn them on to it.

Note: If a bottle of booze is listed as 80 proof, it has an alcohol content of 40%; most American alcohol sold if you've noticed is 80 proof.

Maui- Ramen Ya Queen K Shopping Center

When visiting Maui, and you want to try something local, and local is anything we love, and what we love is Japanese influenced foods, we love it! One place be sure to go to, is Ramen Ya, a small restaurant in the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center. Okay here is how to pronounce it. ( Kah- Ah- Hoo- Mah-Noo) got it?

This is our big mall, and no it's not the Great Mall of America, it's smaller but big for Maui's standards, Macy's and Sears anchors each end of the mall. There's a good food court upstairs, but if you want excellent Japanese food, and ramen noodle soups, this is the place to go. It is on the ground floor of the mall next to Koho's Restaurant which is another good place.

But the Chicken Katsu is huge at this place as well, katsu fanatics will be in heaven at this dig. The chef's there are all Japanese experts in their style of cooking, and if you don't want meats, get a veggie ramen and you're good to go to do the rest of the shopping.
