Local Plate Lunches in Lahaina, Maui try Nagasako Okazu Ya & Deli. Located in the Lahaina Shopping Center across from Foodland Supermarket, off of Highway 30 either turn left on Papaulaua St. heading north, or turn right heading south, the landmark is the Chevron gas station. See the Mc Donald's, turn left on Wainee St., (Why- nay) St. then turn right, you'll see the store on the immediate left, and is central to down town Lahaina's Front Street where all of the shops and restaurants are at.
I have done several blogs on Nagasako's before, but this is a new month, and for those looking to see what we locals have, we have some good simple local grines at this little family dig. The Nagasako family ran Lahaina's only major supermarket when I was a kid, everything was bought at Nagasako's and as the major chain markets invaded Maui also, the Nagasako's fell prey to their marketing tactics, and had to fold their business, but the family kept open a small venture that's been around for decades, the Okazu Ya & Deli is still a great little place to get some very simple lunches.
Their plate lunches are displayed in the hot bar, through the glass case, you look for the items that might turn you on. Such as fried battered fish, teriyaki beef, roast pork with gravy, hamburger steaks, musubi, raw fish, sandwiches, chicken. All plates come with the standard rice and macaroni salad. I love to get a hamburger plate with chow fun noodles in place of rice.
If you are traveling to Maui and staying in the Kaanapali area, stop by Nagasako's Okazu Ya & Deli, get there before noon, because they'll sell out very fast.
If you are ever in Lahaina, give me a call, or email me, or see me on twitter, or facebook. If you want a personal chef service I can do a local style dinner for you and a love one, (just for couples).
