Cone Sushi (Maui)

Cone sushi is one of my faves, no it's not those specialty and fancy, and hip rolls you'll get a Sansei or Isana or where ever, no it's a simple sushi, held together by aburage (ah boo rah geh), which is made of soybeans, or tofu. Tofu is thinly sliced, and deep fried twice. The cone sushi is actually a pouch sushi really, because the aburage is formed with a pouch, it's innovative, how they do this only God knows. But it is manufactured in Japan by the tons every year. Aburage is filled with seasoned rice, or white rice usually short grained for sushi making, and seasoned with rice vinegar, salt, sugar, and mixed with shredded carrots, and that's it. Cone sushi was an awesome cheap or inexpensive snack, or it could be substituted for rice on a plate lunch if a restaurant had that food case where you could see through the glass and then pick your food items. "Hey give me two cone sushi instead of scooped rice." I loved to eat cone sushi with katsu, or roasted pork, or shoyu chicken. Some local markets had a staff of sushi ladies making cone and maki sushi all day long, and you could order it by the boxes, a box of 6, a box of 12, or a huge ass box of a thousand!

If you come to Maui, and you're in Lahaina, Nagasako's Okazu Ya and Deli has this treat, go early or else it'll be gone! Other locations may have it, like Foodland, Times, Longs Drugs, Homemade Bakery, Pukalani Superette, little shops usually carry them. It's an awesome treat and could be a meal in itself.
